How to Get Your Share of The Rebound

Travel is back and in a really big way! There are a lot of travel companies who are experiencing their highest booking days in history. Not just since the pandemic. In history. This has been true of travel advisors too. Many are breaking records for average booking size, booking days, and more!

I hope that you are one of the people that is having this incredible success working with previous clients and new ones. After every downturn in the travel industry, there has been an increase in the utilization of travel advisors. This time is no exception – and it will likely break all previous records. People want to work with travel advisors right now. They are just having trouble finding them.

If your phone isn’t ringing off the hook, you need to make some course corrections now, so you don’t get left behind. One of the best ways to do that is to look at what is working for others. So, what separates those who are excelling right now from those who are struggling? Let’s take a look.

They are accepting the demand and market as it is right now, not waiting on things to go back to the way they were. That is old-school thinking. And old-school thinking will get you left in the dust. Our industry is changing, and things are never going back to the way they were. Successful advisors are adapting and thriving.

They are in touch with every single client. If you haven’t done this yet, don’t be surprised if the client doesn’t call you, but calls someone else. Part of providing a high level of service is being there when they need you. And they really need you right now!

They are reaching out to local media to get their name out there. There is a lot of talk about travel in all types of media right now and many location publications would love to have a local perspective on it. Reach out and share your thoughts.

They are sharing positive talk on social media (both personal and business sites). They aren’t focusing on deals and they surely aren’t complaining. They are inspiring their clients with stories about the amazing variety of travel destinations people can visit right now – and plan for later! People love dreaming about travel: give them plenty of things to dream about and show them you are a travel expert.

They expanded the destinations they work with. For years, many travel advisors have turned their noses up at booking domestic travel. It was below them to focus on US destinations. But here’s a reality from the pandemic: Americans have discovered America. Many realized they have been so focused on traveling internationally they have ignored the wonders in their own backyards, and they are traveling closer to home. And a lot of travel advisors have made a lot of money booking US travel!

And one last point from me: Throw out the old rule book. Forget about wave season. People are planning travel now for the short-term and long-term. Forget about when and where your clients wanted to travel in the past and when and how they booked it. Many people are working remotely and can spend a month living, working, and vacationing somewhere else. Whether they booked far out or close in doesn’t matter now. It’s a different world. Those who adapt thrive, and those who don’t will struggle.
