All industries have their ups and downs, but right now the travel industry – and travel agents in particular – is flying high. Why? Aside from the fact that there are so many places to travel, there are three key reasons it’s a great time to work in the travel industry:

People are traveling more. Part of this is because Baby Boomers traveled with their kids and now those kids expect to travel frequently. Travel isn’t seen as a luxury, but as a necessity. That’s not going to change! And today’s traveler isn’t happy with the typical travel experience. Many of them really want to have unique experiences. They want to do something different than anyone else. They don’t want to go to France and just see the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. They want to go to great local restaurants and see the area in a way that none of their friends have. Maybe that’s a bicycle tour or taking a cooking class – but something unique experience. A travel agent is critical to curating that travel experience.

The media is telling the TA story. Over the past two years there have been more and more articles in consumer media about why travelers benefit from using a travel professional. These articles focus on the benefits to the traveler for working with a professional skilled in the type of travel and/or destination that they are interested in. In other words, the days of succeeding as a generalist are behind us. And in most of these stories they tell readers to expect to pay a fee to work with a skilled agent. This has reinforced the message that travel agents not only still exist, but are thriving!

Millennials love travel agents. Millennials were born from the early 1980s through the mid 1990s, making them in their 20s and 30s. They are particularly likely to use a travel professional because they aren’t impressed with the ability to book online. They do everything online and they know it is a tool, not the solution. So, they look to experts who can save them time and make sure they have an amazing experience. That’s why they turn to travel agents and refer their friends to fantastic agents. And many of them are becoming travel agents! As more of millennials recognize the value of an agent the industry will continue to thrive.

All this means it is truly a great time to work in travel! There is more opportunity now than ever before. If you are already working in travel, I hope you are experiencing the benefits of this renaissance.
